PARAGRAPH WRITING

A paragraph is a group of sentences that focus on one main idea. It is a cohesive arrangement of sentences moving around one idea. In a paragraph there are sentences grouped closely under one idea. The arrangement of sentences and there ranking generates progression in thought. A dominant theme binds the sentences together in a paragraph. It has its own individuality and its own existence. A paragraph can be of various types:

1. Expository Paragraph- In such paragraphs a fact or a thought is informed or explained briefly.

2. Argumentative Paragraph- Argumentative Paragraphs came to a conclusion or an agreement through arguments or persuasions.

3. Descriptive Paragraph- It describes some person, place or things.

4.     Narrative Paragraph- It narrates a story.

Principles of Effective Paragraph Writing

1.     Unity- Unity is necessary in connecting the different parts to the whole.

2.     Be complete- Closely related to accuracy is completeness. A message that lacks important information may create inaccurate impression. A message is complete when it contains all the information the reader needs.

3.     Prefer short, simple words- Short and simple words are more likely to be understood to the reader. Write to achieve express rather than empress.

4.     Write with vigor- Vigorous language is specific and concrete. Vigorous writing holds your reader’s interest.

5.     Positive language: Positive language builds goodwill for you and your organization and often gives more information than negative language.

6.     Clarity of an idea: One of the basic quality of a well written paragraph is to write clearly and to write message the reader can understand, depend on, and act on. The idea presented in the paragraph should be clear and direct.

3.     Books are our best companions

4.     Indian advertising industry

5.     Women’s reservation

6.     Problem of employability of technical students
