English is very important in India as it is becoming a super power. The myth that English is a foreign language and should therefore be neglected is a wrong idea. The beauty of our regional literature has been tasted by the people all over India only through the medium of English language. Rabindranath Tagore`s Gitanjali won him first Nobel Prize for literature among the Asian countries. The former president of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, has advocated Indian thoughts to the world in lucid and simplified English. The Indian Culture and religion has been exposed to the western world by Swami Vivekanand through his matchless skills of English Speeches. The Indian Constitution itself is written in English. Now, is it right for the younger generation to think English as a foreign language? In a country like India where jobs are few and candidates are in alarming numbers, only the use of English would solve the problem of unemployment. The foreign companies will hire and employ English speaking candidates. The problem of unemployment may thus be solved. Considering all these aspects, I am, strongly, of the opinion that we should encourage the learning and teaching of English language.
