Conjunction: Coordinating and Subordinating conjunctions

Conjunction: A conjunction is a word which is used to join two or more than two sentences, clauses, phrases and words.

1.      Veena and Shweta went to market.

       Give me a tea or coffee.

Kinds of conjunction

1.      Coordinating conjunction

2.      Subordinating conjunction

Coordinating conjunctions: Coordinating conjunctions are those conjunctions which are used to connect the sentences of the same rank. In this situation the meaning of each sentence is complete without the help of other one.

Coordinating conjunctions are as follow:

And, but, or, either …or, as well as, still, yet, both……..and, however, neither……nor, otherwise, else, for, so, not only……but also, nevertheless

Examples of coordinating conjunctions:

 ‘And’

1.      He killed the tiger and brought it home.

2.      I took the admission in AKS and started my studies.

 ‘But’

1.      He is rich but miser.

2.      I helped him but he could not succeed.

‘or and either….or.

1.      I will either read or write a book..

 ‘As well as’

1.      India as well Australia reached in final.

2.      P. M. as well president greeted the people on the occasion of Diwali.

‘Not only….but also’

1.      He was not only given the prizes but also he was promoted.

2.      She not only participated in dance competition but also performed well.

 ‘Both…..and’

1.      He is both good speaker and good teacher.

2.      Japan is both powerful and technically advanced country.

 ‘Otherwise’

1.      Study regularly otherwise you will not able to pass the examination.

 ‘Neither …nor’

1.      He neither came to college not met me..

‘So’

1.      He was punished so he wept bitterly.

2.      He was sick so he did not come college today.

Subordinating conjunction: Subordinating conjunctions are those conjunctions which are used to join those two sentences which are not complete as one sentence is depend on another sentence to be meaningful. These conjunctions are used to join the two sentences of un-equal ranks.

Subordinating conjunctions are as follow:

As, because, since, before, till, after, while, when, if, unless, though, although, lest, in order that, as soon as, provided, provided that, as if, that, whether, which, where, why, who, how, as much as, according as, than etc.

Examples of Subordinating Conjunctions

ASCan be use at beginning and mid of the sentence.

Used while sth else is happening:

1.      As she walked along the road, she thought about her father.

2.      The phone rang as I was leaving the room.

Used For comparing people or thing:

1.      Sheela’s almost as tall me.

Used for talking about someone’s job, role or function:

1.      Think of me as your friend, not as your boss.

Reason:

1.      I didn’t buy the dress, as I decided it was too expensive.

Because: for the reason that. Because should be used at mid of the sentence.

 

1.      They didn’t go for a walk because it was raining.

2.      They didn’t go for a walk because of the rain.

Since: as, because.

1.      Since they did not phone me, I will have to phone them.

Before: 

Earlier than sth….

1.      You can call me any time before 10 o’clock.

In front of …

1.      A very difficult task lies before us.

2.      You will appear before the judge tomorrow.

Until:

 Up to the time or the event mentioned..

The restaurant is open until midnight.

We won’t leave until the police get here.

After: later than sth

1.      They arrived at the station after the train had left.

While:

During the time…

1.      He always phones while we’re having lunch.

At the same time

1.      He always listens songs while he’s driving the car.

Used when you are contrasting two sides

1.      Some countries are rich while others are very poor

When:

At what time

1.      I don’t know when she arrived.

2.      Sunday is the day when I can relax.

3.      He jumped up when the phone rang.

If:

1.      If you see him, give him this letter.

2.      We won’t go to the beach if it rains.

3.      If metal gets hot it expands.

Unless: If….not

1.      I was told that unless my work improved, I would lose the job.

Though: in spite of the fact that; although

1.      Though he had little money, Ajay always managed to dress smartly.
